The iconic actress, who notched up yet another Academy Award nomination this year – this time for her role in Steven Spielberg’s The Post – fired the imaginations of the folks at home watching the ceremony thanks to her choice of outfit. She certainly looked Oscars-friendly in her scarlet belted Dior dress, with her hair swept into an updo – except people couldn’t help but notice that, in her red carpet garb, she bore more than a passing resemblance to Shrek’s fairy godmother. And so a social media phenomenon was born.
Yup, we sense this one is going to run and run. Although her behaviour inside the Kodak Theatre – with the actress enjoying herself immensely as the night unfolded – also attracted its fair share of online attention.
Why did Meryl Streep attended the ceremony dressed as the Fairy godmother from Shrek? #Oscars pic.twitter.com/HQZIQ6jpVX

Seriously, who wouldn’t want Meryl at their party? Sadly for Streep she lost out to front-runner Frances McDormand, who took the prize for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – the second time she has taken the best actress Oscar. But at least it looks as though she enjoyed herself at Hollywood’s biggest night…
